The lovely 6-inch Seahorse crystal bowl is part of Waterford’s second edition Classic Crystal Collection; its smaller scale pairs it well with the matching Seahorse 8-inch candlesticks or Seahorse 6-inch rose bowl. Waterford has been making renowned crystal pieces for more than 200 years, and the centuries of craftsmanship are clearly displayed in this series inspired by the seahorse, a creature with ancient, mythical significance. The Seahorse pattern is based on the crest adopted more than a decade ago to represent the Irish seaside location of the Waterford company.
This small bowl, a good size for candy, nuts, or olives, is cut with swirling wedge cuts, punctuated with smaller olive cuts for a sense of upward motion. Between the wedges are fields of raised diamond shapes, with modified rosettes encircling the smooth rim of the bowl to symbolize the trident of Neptune, Roman god of the sea. A small 16-rayed star is cut into the base of the bowl.
To preserve its clarity, do not wash Waterford crystal in the dishwasher; harsh detergent and excessive heat could permanently etch surface of glass. Wash with a mild liquid soap in warm (not hot) water. Certain water may leave a lime or mineral deposit on the crystal; if that happens, vinegar on a soft, nonabrasive cloth will help remove the deposit. Rinse with warm water and polish with a lint-free cloth. Edges and rims are delicate; do not store upside down or place upside down on a draining board. Crystal can focus sunlight into a concentrated beam that could potentially scorch rugs or furniture, so do not store or display in direct sunlight. The lovely pair of 6-inch Lismore candlestick holders is part of Waterford’s Lismore series. Waterford has been making renowned crystal pieces for more than 200 years and has named many of its patterns after towns in Waterford and other neighboring counties. The Lismore design features repeating leaf motifs for a lively, natural look.
The Lismore 6-inch candlestick holders are square at the base and taper socket, while the four-sided stem gently curves first inward and then back out as it nears the top. Small, X-shaped wedge cuts sit at the base of the stem; they are punctuated with elongated oval leaf cuts rising up like candle flames, a pattern that is repeated on the upper tier of the stem. Underneath the square base is a large, eight-rayed star, the points of which are visible from above.
